Luke 10:38
Jesus is in Martha's house
Martha is cumbered, or shall I say anxious, distracted, worried about many things.
We can imagine her rushing about preparing the food, there is probably about
twenty people in attendance.
Its not easy in those cultures for women, it could take the best part of the
morning, they would usually have clay ovens, they did not have fan assisted
ovens, or microwave ovens, they did not have Thames water, thy would have to
fetch the water from a nearby well.
Life was hard for women in those days
So naturally Mary is stressed and anxious while Mary is at the feet of Jesus.
That is the best place to be, all this stress is going on around her, the hustle
the bustle, the bills the council tax has increased, the children clothes is
not ready for school, and we haven't got shopping for this week, the house needs
cleaning.
While all this is going on Mary is at the feet of Jesus listening to his every
word.
That is the best place to be. Psalms 27:4
One thing I have desired of the LORD,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
It gets too much
for Martha, you know when you cannot hold it any longer "Lord don't you
care, I am doing all the work serving you, my sister should be assisting me,
command her to help me. She can listen to you another time.
The Lord replies; It is a perfect time for a lesson in life, his voice is soft
and has compassion, yet there is a sternness to it because he is going to correct
her.
In Hebrews 4:12 it says the word of God is quick and powerful, sharper than
a two edged sword, it is about to cut, and address a weakness in Martha.
Jesus because of Love will always correct his people, we have people in this
age that cannot be corrected, and Pastors are not allowed to say a thing about
members to correct them in Love. In Proverbs it says that open rebuke is better
than secret love, it also says rebuke a wise man and he will love you.
Are you anxious about life, do you sometimes get so caught up in duties, and
responsibility that you miss out on spending time with Jesus.
Even in the service of the Lord.
I was a Martha
Rushing about doing this or that, trying to change the world overnight, doing
things for God but not spending enough time in his presence.
There is something about Mary
There is evidence in the book of John 11:1-3 that she is that woman that washed
Jesus feet with her hair, Luke calls this woman a sinner, and commonly known
as one. Luke 7
But there is truly something about Mary her Devotion to God, she had a real
conversion.
She now has the right priorities in Life.
She values the presence of God, she values Jesus. She cannot get enough; desire
will always cause God to show up in your life.
Were not sure how she came to live such a life before Jesus, but she loved much.
Her worship is an inspiration for all Christians
She has set a standard; money has no value in the presence of God.
She breaks the most expensive perfume, today we have some perfumes in Paris France that that come up to even a thousand pounds, but this was even costlier than than that, it was a years wages, the average wage in the UK is £18,000 .....Would you spend that much in one service on Jesus. Think about it and you can imagine the indignation of someone like Judas, the church treasurer.
This woman raises the standard of worship, and the perfume fills the house; oh if we could worship God until the aroma goes up to heaven.
After Judas outburst along with the rest of the dead heads there. Jesus said let her alone, she has done this for my burial, the Lamb had to be washed and anointed with oil before offering it.....Jesus was the lamb of God.
Jesus was worth every penny of that perfume.
According To Jesus
Mary got her priorities right
What would Jesus say to us!
