This is a question that needs to be asked today, what is it? And what did Jesus
mean when he said it to the woman at the well.
St John 4:19-24
Let us look at the text
..Jesus is replying to the Samaritan woman's confession
that their Fathers worship In the mountain, referring to Jacob, Jesus told her
you do not know what you are worshiping, because at this moment in time salvation
is of the Jews
.God left them from the time Jeroboam made a calf and told
the people to worship it. At that moment in time, the Lord was only in Jewish
worship; this is the first point that Jesus made. The Second point is that even
Jewish worship was not Gods ideal, but the hour is coming and is hear now, for
true worship.
The best way to explain this text is through a story.
I would buy Indian sweets and they tasted really good, but I will never forget
whilst I was in Pakistan
they asked me if I had tasted Indian sweets? I
said yes. In reply they said that is not the real thing, and took me to a shop
where it was made fresh, and when I tasted it, in comparison to what I had tasted,
this had surpassed it.
Until now I cannot bring myself to eating the old one.
Jesus was saying worship in Jerusalem was good but God desired better.
What is the true worship Jesus was talking about? Was it Matt Redmond, or Noel Richards, Graham Kendrick, or Alvin Slaughter?
The main essence of what Jesus was saying is; Worship will not depend on Location, it will not be in a literal tent, or in a literal temple structure.
True Worship is when you are the temple of God; you are the Tabernacle of David
Moses, and Solomon. When you live a life in obedience to my word.
II Chronicles 6:20-21
Daniel Chapter 6:10 Daniel prayed facing towards Jerusalem as Solomon Prophesied.
Gods name was there
I Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit
of God dwelleth in you?
I Corinthians 6:19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy
Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
When saints come together
even two or three God promised to appear.
Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there
am I in the midst of them.
It does not matter where you are, as long as it is in his name.
Whether you have London Gospel Choir with you or not you can still worship.
True worship is heart service, a heart that is yielded to God and his will,
and not just lip service. Mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath
Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth
me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
What did Jesus mean?
Do we really have to go back to Old Testament practice, to worship God in truth?
Do I need to get a shofar (rams horn) do I have to do Jewish Dances?
Is worship really about culture?
Modern worship ideology is creating superstars out of musicians and singers, and it is causing havoc to the body of Christ.
The allegorical method of interpretation has taken hold of the modern theology.
(The allegorical method of interpretation is when you use type shadows, and
symbols in the Old Testament to bring out truth in the New Testament)
My theory is this: the allegorical method of interpretation is ok, once it is
used to support a literal truth in scripture, but must never stand alone, or
be used to establish doctrine.
For example: Jesus died buried and rose the third day in sat at the right hand
of God, in type, or allegorically Joseph went in prison, came out and was at
the right hand of power in Egypt.
We do not literally have to have the exact instruments that Jews had, we do
not have to celebrate their feasts, or even acknowledge them.
We do not have to play Jewish music, unless we want to. All these things are
cultural.
What then is all this teaching about the Tabernacle of David
"In that day I will restore David's fallen tent (tabernacle). I will repair
Its broken places, restore its ruins and build it as it used to be, so that
They may possess the remnant of Edom and all the nations that bear
My name." Amos 9:11-13
What is it?
As most Bible scholars know, the Ark was captured by the philistines and David,
determined return the Ark to Israel, which he did II Samuel 6 the whole chapter
describes the return of the ark .
I Chronicles 16:1 When the Ark came back to Jerusalem, David pitched a tent
outside his house for the Ark to remain on a temporary basis. Hence it was called
the tabernacle of David; the original and many of the utensils remained in Gibeon.
The tabernacle of David did not have an outer court, or inner court, it was just one tent, the Holiest of all, and around the clock people flowed in worshipping sacrificing and singing psalms and they had a recorder ect.
So now because of this, there is now so much said about the tabernacle of David,
in regards to the style and form of worship.
Many teachers believe that it is literally the pattern we must follow in New
Testament worship.
E, .G appointed Psalmist, recorders, shofar, ect whilst all this is good if
it pleases you to follow it.
But we must always remember
we are the temple, we are the tabernacle,
so even if you do not have these Jewish instruments or any kind of instrument,
we can worship, we can sing psalms to ourselves making melody in our heart to
the Lord.
Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Worship is now not so much outward, in a temple or church structure or even an auditorium, worship is intimate, close, personal, and sincere.
What did the prophecy of Amos really mean?
The best way to interpret scripture is to look at the context in which it was
written, from the old testament scripture it is hard to decipher, but with the
help of the New testament scripture in Acts 15:13-18
"After this I will return and rebuild David's fallen tent
(Tabernacle). Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the
Remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear
My name, says the Lord, who does these things that have been
Known for ages. "
There was a great theological dispute in the early church, and it was concerning
the arrival of gentiles, and how they were to be received or if they should
be received.
James rises up amongst them and Quotes Old Testament scriptures to prove that
God had planned before to give salvation to the Gentiles, and this scripture
endorses it.
The Tabernacle of David was accessible, where the original tabernacle only
the priest could enter.
There are words that many people play with, Glory is a common one, and when
mentioned has old testament undertones, as in chronicles with Solomon, or the
cloud with Moses.
Paul makes it clear that the Glory in the new testament is inward. II Corinthians
3
The Glory of the Old Testament was done away in Christ.
The kind of language that is used today, points to much the old testament, Armour
Bearers, Davidic worship, Gods Glory descending.
Invoking the presence of God through worship, it is almost a belief that if
you can say the right things, hit the right musical notes, get the right mood
(this kind of thing can work with your wife or girlfriend, but not with God)
The Lord is sovereign and will show up in power if and when it pleases him.
It will take more than a good musician, or a good choir for God to show up.
It is totally a heart attitude, when we withhold our time, our tithes, our finances,
when we neglect him, when we bow to the idols of this world, money riches, popularity,
pride God will not be mocked even if you Fly Kirk Franklin and his choir to
London, and they can sing the best song, even if it has a Grammy award, it will
not move God.
I believe that music is a great gift, and an asset when it comes to help us
focus on him, and is a great assistance in congregational worship. But the church
today have taken worship to another level, it is everything to modern rock band
or R&B churches.
The Lord said false balances are an abomination unto the Lord.
Proverbs 20:23 (KJV)
23Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not
good.
The over emphasis we have on vocal or musical worship is a false balance.
Obedience to the Lord, is a weightier subject, prayer is weightier, judgement
mercy the love of God these are weightier.
Modern word of faith, restorationist, kingdom dominion churches have turned
simple worship into a science, and have written extensive books, and had countless
conferences, teaching on approach, with old testament allegory.
Worship leaders even believe they can create an atmosphere that will invoke
the Holy Spirit. Words like invoke are used in Buddhism, and the occult.
We use Psalm 22:3
3 But thou art holy, O thou that inhabits the praises of Israel.
Let me explain; praise is an outflow of an appreciative heart, heart where God
is working already.
In other words when my car engine is fired up and fuel is in the tank, there
is an outflow of exhaust.
But the exhaust will not produce an engine, and all the praise from 10 or 10,000
people will not create God.
Our Lord as a living being, not a thing that we invoke through incantations,
or chants.
In closing another important point is this, if you really want God to show
up in your life live for him, obey him, love him with all your heart.
We can notice something that really stood out to me concerning the Tabernacle
of David, it remained 40 years and yes there was 24hour worship and praise,
but there was not any record of God showing up in glory.
Yet as soon as Solomon finishes the Temple as close as he can to the Mosaic
pattern in obedience( it had an outer court, inner sanctuary, and holy of holies)
and Dedicates it immediately the glory of God showed up.
In the same way today, it will take more than singing Hillsongs or Michael w
Smith for Gods glory to show up.
Obedience is better than sacrifice.
Sing make melody in your heart to the Lord, adore him, but let it flow out
of a life of obedience.
This is the kind of worshipper God is looking for.
